Migration Flags

2005-200728 digital images. C-prints, mounted on aluminium DiBond, 50 cm high and 67–75 cm large each

Each MIGRATION FLAG mixes two national flags, or one flag with a motif that shows one subject of this country’s international relations (economic, political, cultural, migration, tourism) – the symbols interpenetrate and interact. Myriam Thyes´ researches and Flash animations from the participatory series FLAG METAMORPHOSES are the origins of this series of digital images.

For this, Thyes used a function of the Flash programme with which one can display many consecutive images of an animation at the same time – they appear semi-transparent superimposed on each other. This view is only intended to control movement sequences in the work process. From each animation, Thyes displayed one, two or more such motion sequences and took screenshots of them. She also exported still images from the animations. For each image in the MIGRATION FLAGS series, she combined and edited the screenshots and stills in Photoshop.

The animations of FLAG METAMORPHOSES are about relationships between countries, such as cultural affinities, migration, political alliances, (colonial) history, conflicts, and so on. The MIGRATION FLAGS images are dominated by a playful, formal approach of “flag mixing“ that questions the concept of nation-state.
