From the catalogue text by Stephan von Wiese:

TREIBHAUS 1994

The exhibition series ‘Treibhaus’ [Greenhouse] began in 1981 and was continued in 1982, 1985, 1986 and 1990. The aim was to give graduates of the Dusseldorf Art Academy a forum that had been lacking until then. The exhibitions promoted awareness of the young art scene. (…) The generally illusion-free attitude of the artists [in the exhibition Treibhaus 6, 1994] was striking: “Art is no longer a quick career. You don’t change the world with art either.” Overarching illusions have collapsed. On the other hand, it is precisely this freedom from illusion that promotes a sense of freedom. A fresh, carefree approach is possible again. Art once again has something to do with personal life, is a trace of life, which, although it does not directly influence the social mechanisms that seem unassailable, can at least put an individual stamp on them. One’s own lifeworlds become visible and one seeks confrontation with the everyday. Orientation towards the “social sculpture” becomes topical again.

(…) Myriam Thyes confronts the viewer with foreign symbols. The Far Eastern symbolic language breaks up hardened feelings and thoughts and provides new orientation. The series of world map paintings corrects the Eurocentric view of the world. (…)
