Small Permissions (at La Défense)

1999 - 20039 photo prints, mounted on aluminium dibond, each 90 x 135 cm

In Paris, I took photographs of the significant buildings in the modern district La Défense, e.g. the Grande Arche de la Fraternité. In museums and books I looked for ritual sculptures and prehistoric images from different parts of the world, which I drew. In my digital work I combined these different, but equally stylized and ideologically or mythically charged aesthetics. “Spirits” of stone-age goddesses and African ancestors appear in the middle of representative architecture in Paris, just like many people from former French colonies today inhabit the capital.
