Die Geste (The Gesture)

Art between Jubilance, Gratitude and Thoughtfulness.

Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection – from Antiquity to Albrecht Dürer to Roy Lichtenstein.

LUDWIGGALERIE is celebrating its 20th birthday with great gratitude and joy. Naturally, such emotional gestures can also be found in the works of art featured in the exhibition as this was the foundational idea that guided the selection of masterpieces from the Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection for the LUDWIGGALERIE. An addition of international loans compliments this look into nonverbal communication or the silent poetry, as Leonardo da Vince referred to art. At the same time and in accordance with the wishes of the collector couple, works from different times and regions are placed into dialogue with each other. The exhibition spans from the antiquity to the European middle ages and all the way to the modern period. The question of what is it that unites objects from within has always been one of the central concerns of the Ludwigs. Encountering other works that address that same issue has nurtured further interest in the topic. Gestures help us understand strangers, but they also can be misleading: Remember not to shake your head while in India! (Excerpt from the press release)
