AFTER TIEPOLO

In der Residenz Würzburg filmte M. Thyes das berühmte spätbarocke Decken-Fresko von Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Taumelig-drehende Videosequenzen bilden die Grundlage einer animierten Collage. Tiepolo's katholischer Himmel wird nach und nach von Planeten, Sternen, Galaxien erfüllt, die die allegorischen Figuren ersetzen. Wissenschaft und Technik entwickeln sich, die menschliche Produktion nimmt zu: Hochhäuser und Kraftwerke verdrängen Tiepolo's Händler, Künstler und Handwerker. Die Bauten ragen hoch in den Himmel, verstellen den Blick darauf. Das christliche und eurozentrische Bild der Welt wird erweitert, bereichert, aktualisiert. Doch unser Wissen um die unendlichen Weiten des Universums führt nicht zu geistiger Erweiterung und Klarsicht, solange wir mit unserem komplizierten Leben in moderner Zivilisation nur uns selbst im Blick haben.

At the Wurzburg Residenz, Thyes recorded the famous 18th century ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Gyratory video sequences are the basis for an animated collage. Tiepolo's catholic sky/heaven is slowly filled with planets, stars, and galaxies - they substitute the allegoric figures. Science and technology are developing, human production on earth increases: High-rises and power plants replace Tiepolo's merchants, artists, and craftspeople. The buildings reach to the sky and hide the view on it. The christian and eurocentric view of the world is enlarged, enriched, updated. But our knowledge of the infinite universe won't lead to a broader mind or serenity, as long as we - living complicated lives in modern civilizations - focus only on ourselves.
